Individualized Therapeutic Care
There’s no place like home, unless you are recovering from a major health event that requires physical rehabilitation. If you or a loved one need rehab after orthopedic surgery, a heart attack, stroke, or any other event that leaves you or them with serious functional limitations, then inpatient rehabilitation programs, like ours at Ashford Hall, are the next step in the journey to recovery.

Why choose Ashford Hall In-Patient Rehabilitation?
When compared to outpatient or home-based services, there are numerous benefits of receiving inpatient rehab. Here are the top four:
- Access to therapists, as well as therapeutic equipment and facilities. Rather than having to travel to an outpatient clinic, therapy is available on-site at Ashford Hall. This way your progress can continue without interruption.
- Ability to focus solely on physical therapy. Inpatient rehab is a particularly powerful treatment option for people who require intensive recovery. If you’ve had major surgery or suffered a severe injury or debilitating illness, inpatient rehab is most likely the best option for you as you will be able to focus 100 percent on your physical therapy without distractions. In addition, your progress can be more consistently and closely monitored than if you were to attend an outpatient rehab center or receive home-based services.
- The expert services of an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals. In addition to physical and occupational therapists, the rehabilitation team at Ashford Hall includes physicians and nurse practitioners, speech and language pathologists, recreational therapists, nutritionists, nursing staff, and case managers, among other highly trained professionals. Each patient is thoroughly evaluated by our rehabilitation specialists, who will, with the input of the patient and/or family members and the patient’s own health care team, formulate the best rehabilitation therapy plan to meet individual recovery goals.
- High quality care with all the amenities of living at home, plus more! Rather than visiting medical offices scattered throughout different cities and towns, you can get all the professional care you need in one place. At Ashford Hall, we have private rooms with Wi-Fi and attractively furnished living space for our rehab patients. There are also many inviting public spaces, dining options, and a wide variety of educational and entertainment programs that are open to our rehab patients.
At Ashford Hall, our primary goal is to provide the highest level of care. Our rehabilitative care programs are designed for those striving to restore abilities lost due to stroke, traumatic head injuries, hip fracture, cardiovascular difficulties, orthopedic surgery, and other debilitating conditions. The programs at Ashford Hall vary in frequency and intensity and include physical, occupational and speech/language therapies. Our goal is to return our patients home safely with the skills they need to continue living life on their own terms.
What is PM&R?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty that involves restoring function for a person who has been disabled as a result of a disease, disorder, or injury.
Physiatry provides integrated, multidisciplinary care aimed at recovery of the whole person by addressing the individual’s physical, emotional, medical, vocational, and social needs. A doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation is called a physiatrist.
Not all skilled nursing facilities have a PM&R on staff. Ashford Hall believes care from a PM&R is vital to recovery. Learn more about Dr. Michael Hassell and his physician assistants on the Meet Our Team page.
What is rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation is the process of helping a person achieve the highest level of function, independence, and quality of life possible. Rehab does not reverse or undo the damage caused by disease or injury, but rather helps restore the person to optimal health, functioning, and well-being. Rehabilitate means to make able.
Rehab Programs
Rehabilitation medicine is designed to meet each person’s specific needs; therefore, each program is different. Some general treatment components for rehab programs include:
- Treating the basic disease and preventing complications
- Treating the disability and improving function
- Providing adaptive tools and altering the environment
- Teaching the patient and family and helping them adapt to lifestyle changes
The success of rehab depends on many variables, including:
- The nature and severity of the disease, disorder, or injury
- The type and degree of any resulting impairments and disabilities
- The overall health of the patient
- Family support
Therapies Provided
Physical Therapy
After a fall, stroke or orthopedic surgery, people typically need a short term physical therapy regimen. Our physical therapy program focuses primarily on independent mobility, regaining strength and balance, using proper body mechanics and energy saving techniques to better perform mobility tasks.
Occupational Therapy
People struggling with daily living activities like bathing, eating, dressing, self-care, and home management tasks can partake in our Occupational Therapy program. Participants gain strength and coordination while learning to conserve their energy.
Speech/Language Therapy
Many people require speech or language therapy after a stroke or heart attack. Ashford Hall offers Speech/Language Therapy protocol to increase functional communication, cognitive skills and teaches safe swallowing by introducing diet modifications and special feeding techniques. Therapy may include muscle retraining, compensatory strategies, and use of communication devices.
